No account, no tracking

The Vocal of Local app and this website have no sign-in. We don’t ask for your name, email or phone number. There are no ads, no analytics and no trackers from other companies.

What stays on your phone

Your language, your area, your saved words and your settings are kept on your own phone (in the app, or in your browser: its storage and one small cookie named “vol” that remembers these choices). They are not sent to us. Clearing the app’s data, or your browser’s, removes them.

Your location

“Nearby” asks for your rough location only when you tap it. It’s used on your phone, to find the languages spoken near you, and it is never sent to us or to anyone else. You can always pick a place by hand instead.

Words and recordings

The app and the website download the dictionary from our own server. Like every website, the server sees your device’s internet address and the time of each request, in logs used only to keep the service running and safe. We don’t use them to find out who you are, and we never sell or share them.

When you write to us

“Report a mistake” and the other email links open your own email app. We receive your email address and what you write, and use them only to reply and to fix the dictionary. Sharing a word goes through your phone’s own share menu; we don’t see what you share.

App updates

The app asks Google Play whether a newer version is available. Google Play’s own privacy policy covers that.

The team’s tools

VOL Studio and VOL Collect are for invited team members only. For them we keep a name, an email and a phone number, to give each person a login and to contact them. Recordings and photos made with speakers are kept on our server; a speaker’s recording is played to the public only when the speaker has agreed.

Children

Vocal of Local is for everyone, children included. It doesn’t collect personal information from anyone.
